Manchester United has another injury blow. Their goalkeeper, David De Gea went off the field during Spain’s European Qualifier with Sweden after an injury.

De Gea injury

De Gea’s injury news is likely to cause concern ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

The club will face Liverpool which will be aiming for an 18th consecutive Premier League win. A total that would equal the record held by Manchester City.

De Gea was clearing the ball up field just before the hour mark when he appeared to pull his groin and immediately dropping to the ground in pain.

With Spain trailing Sweden 1-0 in the Group F encounter, De Gea was able to walk off the pitch accompanied by the Spanish medical team. Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga then replaced him.

Arrizabalaga had been Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper in recent months. However, he was dropped in Stockholm after making a late error against Norway on Saturday night, giving away a late penalty in the 1-1 draw.

This meant De Gea returned for a 41st cap for his country and the first start under new Spanish boss Robert Moreno.

Substitute Rodrigo’s stoppage-time strike earned Spain the draw they needed to qualify for Euro 2020 with a 1-1 draw.

United is 12th in the Premier League without a win in their past three top-flight games.

De Gea was critical of his side’s performances this season after their last match with Newcastle United. He said, “the whole season isn’t acceptable for us.”

“We have injuries but it’s not an excuse. We are Manchester United. All we need is to train hard to keep fighting and to get back to winning games.”

If De Gea is unable to feature at Old Trafford this weekend, Argentine Sergio Romero Is likely to replace him. The latter has featured in the Europa League and Carabao Cup this season.
