An unbeaten half-century from David Miller and Aiden Markram’s solid hand helped South Africa win the T20 World Cup Super 12 Group II by five wickets in Perth.

Markram (52 off 41 balls) was caught by Virat Kohli at deep midwicket for 35, while he would have been run out a run later had India captain Rohit Sharma not missed the stumps from close range. Markram was dismissed in the 16th over and South Africa needed 34 off 27 balls to get past India’s 133 for nine and his dismissal ended a 60-ball 76-run fourth-wicket stand with David Miller (59 not out off 46 balls).

David Miller eased the pressure by smashing Ravichandran Ashwin for two consecutive sixes in the 18th over and then collecting winning runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar off the fourth ball of the final over. South Africa needed six runs from six balls at the start of the 20th over but after a dot and Wayne Parnell scored a single, Miller sent a short ball on the leg side for four runs and finished the match with a four at point off the very next ball.

South Africa are unbeaten by the win and have five points from three games – their other results are second after being washed out against Zimbabwe and beating Bangladesh by 104 runs, with India second after suffering their first defeat of the campaign, which started with wins over Pakistan and the Netherlands.

Ngidi played a big role in South Africa’s victory, saying that in the fifth over, India openers Rohit and Rahul were dismissed and Rohit was caught by Rohit on his own ball and Rahul was caught by Markram at slip. Kohli came in at number three and looked like a player with back-to-back half-centuries against Pakistan and Netherlands as he hit Ngidi for a boundary over extra cover and then hit back-to-back boundaries through midwicket early in the seventh over.

But Kohli could not read Kohli bounced out by Ngidi three balls later and Kagiso Rabada was caught at deep fine leg and the same was the case in the ninth over when Rabada took a brilliant diving catch at that spot after Hardik pulled ngidi’s short ball in his direction.

Deepak Hooda (0) was dismissed by Anrich Nortje in the eighth over as India now lost five wickets before reaching a half-century but Suryakumar was then brilliant with a trademark flick six.

Suryakumar shared a 40-ball 52-run partnership with Dinesh Karthik for the sixth wicket but Karthik contributed just six runs in 15 balls. For a long time, it looked like Suryakumar would have been part of the winning team if his team fielded well but his innings went in vain.
