Barcelona’s fans are waiting for magical performances from Depay and Aguero. As Messi left the team, all the eyes are looking at these players now.
Uncertain future in La LIga
Barcelona face a campaign full of uncertainty following the departure of Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine guaranteed a minimum of 40 goals per season, and his Camp Nou exit has left an enormous void in the Blaugrana’s goal scoring department, which two of their summer signings look set to attempt to fill: Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero. In less than four years, Barcelona’s famed MSN attacking trident has disappeared, following the departure of Neymar to PSG in the summer of 2017, Luis Suarez’s move to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2020 and now Messi’s exit.
As a result, the consistent supply of goals that these players contributed has dried up, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho failing to live up to expectations at the Camp Nou. However, there is hope that Memphis and Aguero, both of whom arrived on free transfers this summer, could go some way to easing Barcelona’s goal scoring headaches this season. The Dutchman registered 20 goals in Ligue 1 last season and has the complete faith of Ronald Koeman, who sees him as a vital component in helping to replace Messi.
Aguero has experience in La Liga
Although there are causes for pessimism over Aguero’s arrival, such as the fact that he is 33 and arrives having barely featured at Manchester City last season, there are causes for real optimism too. His record in front of goal speaks for itself, having scored 101 times at Atletico Madrid, followed by 260 strikes in Manchester, as he established himself as one the best strikers in world football. Let’s see how Aguero and Depay would continue working together and if they can impress fans in the debut season.
