Extending contract with Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone has extended his contract with Atletico Madrid by two years, with the new deal taking him to 2024. E Cholo, who returned to the club at the end of 2011, could complete 13 seasons at the helm with Atleti, with whom he he has won eight trophies – more than any other coach in the club’s history. The Argentinean and his coaching team signed the new contract today at the Wanda Metropolitano. Talks between the club and coach have been ongoing for several months and Atletico’s confidence in Simeone was underlined when he guided the team to the league title last season – his second with the club. In every aspect Atleti continue to meet objectives – one of which is to always finish among the top three in LaLiga to secure their place in the Champions League. In ensuring that, Simeone has managed to maintain a relatively stable, competitive squad.

Simeone – Atleti’s long-serving coach

Simeone has spent almost a decade in charge – a rare occurrence in Spanish football, and in European football. No other coach in Spain’s top flight has remained in the post for as long as Simeone has at Atleti. Alvaro Cervera, who is about to start his sixth season at Cádiz, is the second longest-serving coach in Spain’s top division. In Europe, only Stéphane Moulin, who took over at French side Angers in the summer of 2011, has spent longer at the same club.

Simeone’s coaching staff will remain with him until 2024 – Nelson Vivas (second coach), Oscar Ortega (fitness trainer), Pablo Vercellone (goalkeeping coach) and Hernán Bonvicini (assistant coach). Simeone wants to bring the Champions League to Madrid. They were a little bit close to it previous season. What would happen next season, let’s look for the transfers.
