Diogo Jota has agreed to terms with Liverpool on a new long-term contract that would keep him at the club until the summer of 2027.

The Portugal international has been rewarded with a new five-year contract after impressing since coming from Wolves in 2020.

Last season, the 25-year-old scored 21 goals in all competitions for the Reds, but he will have hard competition for a starting spot this season with the arrival of Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

Jota was also instrumental in helping Jurgen Klopp’s team win the FA Cup and Carabo Cup last season, whilst just missing out on the Premier League crown by one point.

‘Well, I have to say, [I’m] incredibly proud,’ Jota said after signing his new contract with Liverpool.

‘Obviously, since my arrival two years ago, I’ve established myself as a significant player in this club, which is exactly what I intended from the start.’

Signing a new long-term contract is undoubtedly testament to the club of their belief in me as a player. It’s obviously quite important for me to demonstrate that I’ll be here for a while.

‘Let’s do it, it’s the start of a new season.’

Jota, who has 34 goals in 85 appearances for Liverpool, has missed the club’s pre-season fixtures due to a hamstring injury.

The attacker is certain to miss Saturday’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Fulham.

‘Unfortunately for me, I had an upset in this pre-season since I got hurt [in] the final game of the season while playing with Portugal,’ he continued.

‘As I was returning in this preseason, I felt it a little bit again.’ So, I’d assume it’ll be a few more weeks.

‘When you battle for everything, like we did last year, you just want to do it all over again and better, because it’s possible.’

‘That drive is in me, and I know it’s in my teammates and everyone on the squad.’ We have everything we need to compete for those trophies out there.’
