Ferguson celebrated wildly on the touchline inside five minutes when Richarlison headed Djibril Sidibe’s cross past Kepa Arrizabalaga. This was his first managerial role following the departure of Marco Silva on Thursday.

Ferguson made an instant impact on the pitch and a spectacular one-off it as he started his reign with a vital victory over Chelsea.

Everton banished their recent struggles to run out fully deserved winners on a thunderous occasion illuminated by the former striker’s wild celebrations.

It was a backs-to-the-wall job for the hosts. Chelsea dominated possession and territory. However, Everton had their chances to score and doubled their lead four minutes after the break. Calvert-Lewin robbed Kurt Zouma before slotting through Kepa’s legs.

Three minutes later, Chelsea got themselves back in the game. Mateo Kovacic fired in a pinpoint low effort from 25 yards. Despite their efforts, their comeback hopes were quelled later on. Their defensive shambles allowed Calvert-Lewin to poke home for his first Premier League double late on.

Ferguson and his players took the acclaim at the final whistle blow as the clouds over Goodison Park lifted.
