Durbar Rajshahi, a Bangladesh Premier League franchise, has issued an apology for the delayed payment of fees to their cricketers. The franchise has committed to clearing fifty percent of the outstanding payments by January 16, following a dispute that led to the cancellation of a training session in Chattogram on January 15.
The situation arose after the local players of the team protested about the unpaid dues, while overseas players and coaching staff had received 25 percent of their total pay after the team’s fourth match on January 6. However, the franchise failed to fulfill their commitment to the local cricketers, prompting them to boycott the practice session.
In response to the incident, BCB president Faruque Ahmed intervened by convening a zoom meeting with the board directors and holding discussions with Rajshahi officials, captain Anamul Haque, and several other players at the team hotel. Jayed Ahmed, the operation in-charge of the franchise, publicly apologized for the delays, stating that the cancelled practice was not directly related to the payment issue.
“We are committed from the team management to all cricketers that we will pay them by January 16 and the not practicing is not related to it,” Jayed said in a statement provided by the team management.
Acknowledging the delay in payments, Jayed assured that the cricketers would receive their dues as promised. He mentioned that the rest of the payments would be made in two installments, with 25 percent in cash and the remaining 25 percent through cheque.
BCB director Manjur Alam also spoke on behalf of the BCB president, stating that negotiations were ongoing to resolve the issue. He expressed optimism about reaching a solution soon and highlighted the positive engagement from all parties involved.
The BPL governing council had set specific payment schedules for franchises to ensure timely payments to players, with 50 percent to be paid before the start of the tournament, 25 percent during the tournament, and the remaining 25 percent after the tournament. However, it was revealed that some local players in the Rajshahi camp had also not received their daily allowances regularly.
Looking ahead, Durbar Rajshahi announced plans for a practice session at the M A Aziz Stadium in Chattogram on Thursday in preparation for their upcoming match against Sylhet Strikers on January 17.
