As he confirmed his departure from Manchester United, Edinson Cavani claimed that despite the club’s poor season and his own injury-plagued season, he will leave with fond memories.

After two years at United, the 35-year-old Uruguayan striker was largely anticipated to leave in the summer.

Cavani had a strong start to his career in England, scoring 17 goals in his debut season with Manchester United.

However, he struggled in his second season, scoring only two goals in 20 appearances due to injury difficulties that kept him out for major portions of the season.

Cavani rapidly became a popular character among United supporters, but his lack of playing time has irritated them.

Since the beginning of January, he has only played 90 minutes for the club once, in the 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in United’s last game of the season on Sunday.

Cavani congratulated United’s fans in an interview with the club’s website but said he hoped for more this season.

‘I genuinely have nothing but words of gratitude for Manchester United’s fans and supporters,’ Cavani added.

‘Honestly, they have treated me with a great deal of respect from the minute I came.’ I believe they’ve recognized all of the hard work I’ve always tried to put in to the best of my ability for this squad.

‘I am very appreciative, and I will leave here with a wonderful remembrance of their devotion for me, which they have always shown.’

‘This season, I wanted to contribute more.’ One of the things that has left me with a sour taste is the fact that we were unable to have the fans with us throughout our really entertaining and respectable [2020/21] season”.

“And now, with the supporters returning to the grounds and stadiums, I haven’t been able to have the type of campaign, if I’m being honest, that I would have enjoyed on a personal level.’
