International Friendlies

England’s debut match in 2022 will take place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening, when Switzerland pay a friendly visit to the city.

Both sides qualified for the Qatar World Cup by finishing first in their respective groups, and preparations for the finals have begun.

Team News

  • Southgate has already lost Tammy Abraham, Aaron Ramsdale, Reece James, and Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury in the build-up to Saturday’s encounter, while Sam Johnstone is another late withdrawal due to illness, and Bukayo Saka missed training earlier this week with a bug.
  • With a dearth of natural right-backs in the squad the uncapped Kyle Walker-Peters might make his Three Lions debut this weekend in a back four.
  • Marc Guehi and Tyrick Mitchell of Crystal Palace will also be looking to earn their first senior squad minutes, as Harry Kane looks to equal or past second-placed Bobby Charlton in the Three Lions’ scoring rankings, with the skipper now on 48 goals to Charlton’s 49.

  • Switzerland also lacks a full complement of its first-choice XI, as veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer and fellow shot-stopper Philipp Kohn are both injured, meaning Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund might get the nod at Wembley.
  • Denis Zakaria of Juventus and Haris Seferovic of Juventus, who has 24 goals, are both absent, with Mario Gavranovic set to shoulder the goalscoring burden here.
  • Granit Xhaka needs just two more caps to hit the century mark for his country, while Xherdan Shaqiri, who has already surpassed that level, should fill the number 10 role upon his return to English soil.

Prediction Analysis

While a match between two sides that concede relatively little in the defensive third is unlikely to produce the goal-fest that many neutrals dream for, the Three Lions’ record versus their next opponents speaks for itself.

On paper, there is little to choose between the two teams, but England’s mix of seasoned and young attacking options – many of whom have been impressive for their clubs in recent weeks – should have little difficulty breaching the Swiss backline en route to a confidence-boosting victory.

Our prediction is England 2-0 Switzerland.

Possible Lineup

England: Pickford; Walker-Peters, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Bellingham; Sterling, Mount, Foden

Switzerland: Kobel; Mbabu, Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Xhaka, Freuler; Okafor, Shaqiri, Vargas; Gavranovic.
