England vs West Indies

In the 7th match of the ICC Women’s World Cup, West Indies defeated England by 7 runs in a thrilling match on Wednesday. England had a target of 226 runs, in response to which the team was all out on the score of 218 runs with 14 balls left in the play.

Opener Tammy Beaumonte (46) was the top scorer. While Sophia Dunkley scored 38 runs off 35 balls and Danielle Wyatt scored 33 runs off 31 balls. Shamilia Connell took 3 wickets for West Indies.

Earlier, after winning the toss and batting first, West Indies posted a score of 225/6. West Indies openers D. Dottin (31 off 64) and Hayley Matthews (45 off 58) started well with the bat and gave a solid foundation.

Wicketkeeper Sheman Campbell (66) was the top scorer with the bat. Also, Chedean Nation also scored 49 runs in 74 balls which helped West Indies to post a defendable target. For England, Sophie Ecclestone bagged 3 wickets and gave 20 runs in 10 overs.

England had a shaky start, losing 4 wickets at 74 with a slow scoring rate in 20 overs. Furthermore, the collapse didn’t stop and within 22 runs, they lost the key wicket of Tammy Beaumont.

The next batters, Sophia Dunkley and Danielle Wyatt put up a 60 runs partnership and helped England to reach 154. Unfortunately, the next 2 overs were of calamity for England and they lost 3 wickets.

Towards the end overs, England needed only 9 runs in the last 18 balls and 8 wickets of the team had fallen. Sophie Ecclestone was firm on the crease with one end.

In the 48th over, Ecclestone was on strike off Anissa’s first ball. She played a quick shot that went straight into Anissa’s hands. It was a catch, but Anissa Mohammad missed.

However, the ball clipped her fingers and hit the wicket. Kate, standing non-strike, was outside the cross crease and was run out. Cross scored 27 runs. Cross and Ecclestone added 61 runs for the 9th wicket.

England had only one wicket left, but still, Ecclestone changed the strike with a single off the second ball and Anya Shrubsole came on strike.

On the fourth ball, Anya went ahead and tried to play the shot, but got bowled. Anissa bowled Anya on the yorker ball and West Indies won the match. This is the Windies’ first win over England in the World Cup.

This is England’s second consecutive defeat in this tournament. They are incumbent champions winning the Women’s World Cup in 2017.

In the first match, Australia beat England by 12 runs. The team is currently in 8th position in the points table. At the same time, this was the second consecutive victory for the West Indies. In their first match, West Indies beat New Zealand by 3 runs. West Indies are at the second position in the points table with 4 points.
