England’s six-wicket win against the Netherlands in the second one-day international may have been a stellar one but captain Eoin Morgan being dismissed for naught for the second game in a row is a worrying situation.

While England’s ODI calendar has been empty for 11 months, in international Twenty20 cricket, Morgan has not crossed fifty in 24 matches – and he was unable to score a run on Amstelwein in a seven-ball innings.

The cheering crowd was temporarily silenced as Morgan was dismissed – Eoin Morgan has been instrumental in making England the best white-ball team in the world. But on the day Netherlands captain Peter Seelar announced his retirement with a persistent back injury, discussions started about Morgan’s form and fitness.

Moeen Ali presented the 100th cap to Jason Roy in the presence of his wife and daughter. “We won the game, he’s happy as soon as the result is out,” Roy said. Defending his captain, Roy said, “He (Morgan) has turned away from people again – it’s just the fickle nature of the game. He’s an incredible worker, he’s also an incredible human being so I will definitely back him.”

Roy got off to a fine start in England’s run chase, opening the first over with three boundaries. Vivian Kingma was dealt with in the second over as well, with two more deliveries being sent across the boundary, one straight, the other towards backward square leg.

Roy and Phil Salt, who again put on 77, scored 139 runs before Roy was dismissed for 73. Aryan Dutt then bowled Salt, followed by 3 wickets in 19 balls, including the wickets of Eoin Morgan and Liam Livingstone. From there Moin and Malan took over the innings and took the team to victory quickly. Meen scored 42 runs from 40 balls and Malan scored 36 runs with the help of a four and a six.
