Eoin Morgan will rest himself for some of England’s limited-overs internationals this summer amid concerns over his fitness, but he insists he still feels as though he will contribute in the World Cup victory in Australia this winter.

Eoin Morgan injured his right quad after playing back-to-back games in Barbados during England’s T20I series against the West Indies in January and again playing for Middlesex in the Blast despite managing his workload from games Suffered from injury.

His position as limited-overs captain has come under scrutiny – he has not scored a single half-century in international cricket in the past 18 months, and none in domestic T20 cricket – but his intention is to at least play T20 cricket. To last till 20 World Cups.

Asked if he would continue to defend England’s 50-over trophy in India next winter, Morgan said: “It’s a long way off. I have to focus on the T20 World Cup first. I will continue to contribute as I can.”

“Am I still contributing within the team and off the field? I [have] been as honest with everyone since I started captaining. At the moment, I still feel like I can contribute and I still feel like I can play my part in the World Cup win. This is an important campaign for me.”

England’s new white-ball coach Matthew Mott extended his support to Eoin Morgan in his first press conference in the role on Wednesday. “They always say that he should be selected on the basis of form and merit as a batsman in his team and when he feels that is not the case, he will part ways,” Mott said. “I think being at that point has a long way to go.

“Great players score runs at different times and sometimes you flick a switch and it turns and you wonder what the ruckus is all about. You can tell when he speaks, everybody He’s listening. That leadership is something that may not be recognized as much from the outside as it is from the inside. There’s great cricket ahead of him.”

Morgan said he is “100% committed” to playing all three ODIs. However, he will miss at least two T20Is out of England’s six T20Is this summer, due to England playing on consecutive days during both the India and South Africa series.

“It’s unlikely that I will play every match this summer,” he said, “but it totally depends on how I get from here to that match. If I am fit and everything is going well, of course, but if not, then there is no need to try to replicate it for the World Cup because it doesn’t happen [in ICC events].”

In terms of focusing on his position, Morgan said that, “It happens all the time as a player, as a captain no matter what. I really have the best interests of the team at my heart. It’s always been It’s been like this: Ever since I took captaincy, I’ve relied on that way. It’s a privilege to be in the position I’m in at the moment.”

England haven’t played an ODI series for quite some time as their other side wiped out Pakistan after the Covid outbreak in July 2021 and have played only one white-ball series since last year’s T20 World Cup – Jan In a 3-2 loss to West Indies. As a result, Morgan said he sees the series as the start of his run-in ahead of this year’s tournament.
