Garcia hopes to play alongside Messi

Eric Garcia is hoping to share the dressing room with Lionel Messi at Barcelona. Still, financial problems at Camp Nou are preventing both men from committing to contracts at Camp Nou. The La Liga Giants have put deals in place with several new additions, with agreements lined up for Sergio Aguero, Emerson Royal and Memphis Depay. However, salary caps in Spain are proving problematic, with Messi becoming a free agent as he waits on funds to free himself up for new conditions. Speculation continues when it comes to the future of the Argentine, but Garcia remains confident when it comes to playing with an all-time great in 2021-22. When asked if he expected Messi to sign a new deal, Eric Garcia told reporters: “I hope so.”

Luis Enrique showed to Garcia a lot of confidence

“You don’t have to talk about how good Messi is, the best player there has ever been. Hopefully, I can share the dressing room with him. The top-rated centre-half has decided to return to his roots this summer following the end of his deal at Manchester City. Garcia is, however, yet to be registered and claims he does not know how financial problems will affect his arrival at Barca. “I did not know anything,” he said when asked about significant obstacles behind the scenes. Garcia added to the question if he has been in touch with the president of the club and the coach of the first team after the announcement of his switch: “With Joan Laporta. With Ronald Koeman, no.” So far, Garcia has focused on international commitments with Spain after Luis Enrique called upon him for Euro 2020 duty despite 12 appearances for City last season.

On that selection, Garcia said: “I had my doubts because it is true that I played little, but the coach always showed me a lot of confidence. When I saw that I was chosen, I was thrilled. I am very grateful to Luis Enrique”. The 20-year-old went on to say, with two starts made for Spain in their run to the semi-finals: “I am very thankful for the confidence that was shown to me from the very beginning. All the players want to play, but my situation was as it was to come here and having minutes is something I didn’t expect. So when I play, I try to be confident.” Spain will return to European Championship action on Tuesday when facing Italy in a last-four showdown at Wembley Stadium.
