Erling Haaland is very active in the transfer window. As the player says, he will stay in Dortmund for one more year – let’s see what will happen.

Erling’s future in Dortmund

Erling Haaland’s future may appear to have become overshadowed in the headlines recently by those of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo and others, but the truth is that the plan was always for the Norwegian to stay at Borussia Dortmund this season. The striker arrived at Dortmund in January 2020 and his contract included a clause which has been much talked about but which remains rather secretive. The clause states that from September 1, 2021, the player and his agent can negotiate a move abroad for a fixed sum, but for the 2022/23 season.

At least two season for Dortmund

The stipulated fee is not known, with all of those involved being elusive on the subject, but it is believed to be around 75 million euros, with some reports suggesting it may include add-ons rising to 90 million euros. In either case, in today’s football world, it would represent a bargain for one of the top players in the game and well below his market value, which Transfermarkt set at 130 million euros. This pact negotiated between Dortmund and Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, provides some benefit to all parties. For the club, it represents a commitment that the player would not seek an exit prior to 2022, giving them one of the best young players in the game for at least two years, ideally two full seasons in addition to that initial six-month spell in Dortmund. For the player, it means that he will be able to seek a new challenge for a price that is more accessible for other clubs, giving him more choice and facilitating a potential move, instead of risking Dortmund playing hardball with any suitors and holding out for a world-record fee.
