Everton was outraged that a clear handball from Rodri was not punished with a point kick.
A little about the topic
The Toffees wrote a formal letter of complaint to PL after missing a penalty due to a controversial call from VAR late Saturday night against Man City. Everton went down to a late Foden goal but had every right to feel offended at the ceremony at Goodison Park. Man City’s Rodri appeared to have made a solid handball in the box, but VAR refused to throw a snout that could have put Lampard’s men into the lead – and now Everton is seeking an apology from PL.
What did Frank Lampard say?
The Toffees have so far declined to release details of the letter sent to the PL, but retain the understanding that the decision was not to take the game back offside against the hosts, but rather outright waiving the free-kick. Speaking on Monday, however, Frank Lampard expressed his and his team’s disappointment with the challenge. Frank Lampard told the club’s official website that Man City fans and players will know they got away with one. The hand is out, he moves his hand to the ball, all criteria are hit for handball.
It’s a really bad day for VAR that they got it wrong. Frank faded even more right after the final whistle, saying that VAR had two minutes to look at him and think that they didn’t give it as a penalty when he hits him on the arm, in an unnatural position. According to Lampard, he has a three-year-old daughter at home who can tell it’s a penalty.
Pep Guardiola reaction
Even Pep Guardiola seemed to admit that his team was very lucky to escape the sanction for Rodri’s handball. Pep signaled to reporters that the Dele Alli pass looked like an offside to Richarlison. If it’s not offside, it’s a penalty. Saturday’s defeat leaves Everton in 17th place in the PL, just one point away from the relegation zone.
