Cricket enthusiasts expected a lot from Rohit Sharma when he succeeded Virat Kohli as the captain of India in all formats. While the veteran opener has relished success as captain in the IPL for Mumbai Indians, he has struggled to repeat the same leadership approach for the Indian team in the international arena. India failed to qualify in the previous year’s Asian Cup knockouts, the team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-finals by eventual winners England and recently, they also lost their second consecutive World Test Championship final.
Indian skipper faced a lot of criticism
India lost the WTC final against Australia by 209 runs. After this loss, the wait for an ICC trophy for ten years continues because the last time the team won an ICC trophy was in 2013. With the BCCI grooming candidates for captaincy, Rohit’s future as a captain will highly depend on the squad’s performance in the 2023 World Cup, which is to be held in India later this year. Although the Indian skipper faced a lot of criticism on social media after the WTC loss, the former Australian captain showed faith in Rohit Sharma.
Clarke praised Rohit Sharma
Recently, in an interview, the 2015 World Cup winning Captain Clarke said, “I will keep my faith in Rohit because he is a very good captain. I like his aggressive attitude, and he stays positive. If we look at his IPL record, he has had a lot of success as a leader”. He further said that just because India lost the WTC final, it does not mean that Rohit is not the right person to lead the Indian team. The fact that India qualified again for the WTC final makes them the only team to make it consecutively to the finals. This shows the hard work the team has done for the last four years. With the World Cup just around the corner, it is also important to maintain stability.
Losing one final doesn’t make him a bad leader- Clarke
Clarke also pointed out that India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from Australia by defeating them at their home. The former Australian skipper reflected on Rohit’s batting records and his contributions for the team. Clarke believes that losing one final doesn’t make him a bad captain and nor does this makes India an inferior team because making their way to the finals consistently is not at all easy and to do this especially in test cricket is admirable so people should watch it before passing judgements.
