Gautam Gambhir has finally broken his silence about his relationship with Virat Kohli. Last month, we saw a controversial face-off between Gambhir and Kohli during the IPL, where Gambhir was Lucknow Super Giants’ mentor while Kohli was playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. After RCB’s win over LSG, the former RCB skipper and Gambhir had a heated conversation. This showdown reminded everyone of their old IPL rivalry as they took a jibe at each other after RCB defeated LSG at their home ground.
Gambhir clarifies his relation with Virat
In 2013, when Gautam Gambhir was playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders, he had an ugly faceoff with Kohli in between the matches. This season added a new rivalry chapter between the former India teammates.
Recently, during an interview, Gambhir shared his views about the verbal squabble with Virat Kohli and clarified that there was nothing personal between the two. Trying to play down the controversy, Gambhir also mentioned the name of former Indian captain Ms Dhoni and said, “My relation with MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli is similar, if there is an argument, it remains on the field and not off the field, they want to win just as much as I want to.
Former teammates had a clash after match
Former RCB skipper Virat Kohli had a heated conversation with LSG’s pacer Naveen-ul-Haq before facing off against their mentor. After this, Kohli was also seen having a raging talk with their batsman, Kyle Mayers, and after confronting Kohli, Gambir was seen walking towards him after they shook hands. Both Gambhir and Kohli were fined 100 percent of their match fees for breaching the IPL code of conduct at the time.
Fights are just on field- Gambhir
Gambhir further explained that he had many fights on the cricket field and always ensured that those fights and heated conversations stayed on the field only. He said the argument between two people should remain between those two only and within the cricket field, not outside.
Gambhir also opened up about how a lot of people demanded an interview just for TRPs and wanted a clarification statement from him, but he believes that the things that happened between two people don’t need to be clarified.
Both players have made a massive contribution to the team
The IPL is not the only stage where Gambhir and Kohli are seen having heated faceoffs with the opposition. During his career in team India, Gambhir was often seen getting into conflicts, especially with Pakistani players. His rivalry with Shahid Afridi still stands as one of the biggest rivalries in cricket, while on the other hand, Kohli also shows his aggression in several moments of the match and doesn’t back off to sledge the opposition and counter them if he receives them.
Aside from all this, both players have made a massive contribution to the Indian team. Both were part of the 2011 ICC World Cup winning team, and no one can forget their match-winning innings in 2009 against Sri Lanka, where both of them scored centuries and won the match for India. In that match, Gambhir scored 150 runs and Kohli scored 107 runs. The great gesture by Gambhir when he asked to present his “man of the match award” to Virat, who scored his maiden hundred in that match is also still remembered.
