At his US unveiling, Gareth Bale refuted suggestions that he had joined a “retirement league” and pledged to star for Wales at the 2024 European Championships and beyond.
After nine years at Real Madrid, the 32-year-old signed a one-year contract with the MLS’s LAFC.
Given interest from the Premier League, his local club Cardiff, and other, more established tournaments, some have questioned the transfer.
He addressed dozens of assembled reporters and cheering fans in a field-level suite at the upscale Banc of California Stadium, “This league has come a long way in the previous ten years.”
I no longer believe anyone views it as a retirement league. The weather and travel conditions are both bad.
Bale, who will turn 33 on Saturday, added, “The standard is rising here.” It’s much better than Europeans believe. Everything is getting better; this league is on the rise.
Bale, who has the option to extend his contract by 18 months, will lead Wales at the World Cup this winter.
However, he stated that he hopes to represent his country in next major competition.
He stated, “I haven’t been here for six to twelve months; I’ve been coming here for as long as possible.”
I want to build a name for myself in the league. This is not a temporary situation. It affords me the option to continue competing in future Euros – and even beyond.
Being here affords me the best opportunity to qualify for the European Championships, and who knows?
Bale, a former Tottenham player who won 19 titles in Spain, attended his new club’s 3-2 win over LA Galaxy on Friday and praised the atmosphere.
He stated, “It was one of my most exciting nights at a football game.”
“This is a beautiful atmosphere; everything you see is astounding. With any luck, I will be able to help this club reach the next level.’
