Bale will nevertheless leave the club as one of its most successful ever players

Gareth Bale has been posted missing for much of the season for Real Madrid. Still, he was in full view and smiling widely as he celebrated picking up his fifth Champions League medal on Saturday, equalling the number won by Cristiano Ronaldo. Seven has been the magic number for the Welsh forward this season: seven total appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos; seven minutes played in the Champions League. An unused substitute for the final and essentially a forgotten man for most of the campaign, except for the very beginning, when Carlo Ancelotti looked to be giving him a chance in LaLiga, Bale will nevertheless leave the club as one of its most successful ever players. Only one player in history has more Champions League trophies than Gareth Bale, and that’s Paco Gento, who won six with Real Madrid.

Since arriving from Spurs, Bale has won a whopping 16 trophies with Real Madrid

The last couple of years may have soured Bale’s reputation in Madrid, but his record will go down in history. Since arriving from Spurs, Bale has won a whopping 16 trophies with Real Madrid. With his contract expiring soon, it would be one of the biggest ever shocks in football if the Welshman plays another game for Los Merengues, but fans should look back on the whole of his time at the Bernabeu not just the last two or three years. In addition to those 16 trophies, Bale leaves with a record of 258 appearances and 106 goals scored. He’s spent almost a decade at one of the world’s biggest and most historic clubs, played a crucial role in some of their biggest triumphs and won it all.

Relations between the former Southampton man and a section of Madridismo (in the stands, the boardroom and the press) have certainly soured in more recent times, but it was nice to see Bale go out with a smile on his face. In time perhaps most fans will smile when they look back on his contribution, too.
