Bale finally needs to sit down with the club and resolve his problems

Gareth Bale must sit down with Real Madrid to set out the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future at the club, says John Toshack. The former Real Madrid and Wales manager also believe that it would be helpful for Bale to be more public about his issues at the club. The 31-year-old has been out of favor under Zinedine Zidane this season, making only 20 appearances in all competitions and looks noticeably uncomfortable during the LaLiga title celebration in Madrid. Bale nearly left for China early in the season but now seems destined to stay on the periphery at the Santiago Bernabeu, unless another club matches his €15m (£13.7m/$17.2m) salary at year. This stagnation left the feeling that Bale was wasting his talent as he neared the end of his peak years – and Toshack wants to see things resolved.

Zidane has other ideas

“Very often these things happen,” Toshack told reporters. “It’s not working out, and the coach has other ideas, and you have to sit down and figure it out. I think there must be some dialogue, and they should sit down.” Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, has repeatedly dismissed reports that the winger may leave Madrid, recently stating that he is “going nowhere” this summer and will see the remaining two years. However, Toshack believes that fans would love to hear more directly from Bale himself. “I don’t think too many people here were happy with the comments that came out of the people who represent him,” said Toshack. “I would like Gareth to say a little more himself, and I think many people here in Spain would as well.”

“But the ins and outs of all this, I’m not sure”. But when an agent comes out and says he has two more years of a contract. So he’s going to see his agreement, that’s certainly not the road I would take”. With a pounded title, Bale was left out of the traveling squad, which drew 2-2 against Leganes on the final day of the Spanish league season. Still, it remains to be seen whether he will be part of Zidane’s plans for the last-16 Champions League second-leg game against Manchester City on August 7.
