In an exciting development for Indian cricket, Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the senior India Men’s team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday. The former cricketer’s first task will be the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, featuring 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is starting on July 27.
Taking over from Rahul Dravid, who led the team to victory in the T20 World Cup, Gambhir will be responsible for overseeing the development and performance of the Indian cricket team. Despite lacking previous coaching experience, Gambhir’s successful tenure as a mentor for IPL teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders and his illustrious playing career make him a suitable choice for the role.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new position, Gambhir stated, “India is my identity, and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honored to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud.”
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah praised Gambhir’s clear vision for the team and his vast experience, emphasizing his confidence in the former cricketer’s ability to lead Indian cricket forward. Meanwhile, Shah expressed gratitude towards Rahul Dravid for his successful tenure, which saw India’s dominance across formats, including winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
President of the BCCI, Roger Binny, also commended Dravid for his brilliant run with the team and expressed confidence in Gambhir’s leadership. Binny stated, “His appointment as Head Coach marks a new chapter for Indian cricket. His experience, dedication, and vision for the game make him the ideal candidate to guide our team forward. We are confident that under his leadership, Team India will continue to excel and make the nation proud.”
As Indian cricket enters a new era under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir, fans can look forward to exciting times ahead as the team strives to achieve new heights on the global stage.
