Ajinkya Rahane was dropped from the Indian team last year ahead of the home series against Sri Lanka, and the possibilities of his return to the team were very low, but he grinded and made a stunning comeback in IPL 2023, which also led to his comeback in the Indian team for the WTC final. He emerged as India’s highest run-scorer after scoring a crucial 89 runs in the first inning. His spectacular comeback gave him another opportunity, and now he will also be playing the role of Vice Captain for India’s tour of the West Indies.

In December 2021, Ajinkya Rahane was removed from the role of vice captain ahead of the South Africa tour, and Rohit Sharma was made the new Vice Captain. After the tour when Kohli stepped down as the test skipper , Rohit Sharma was named the captain of the team in all formats. Rohit was made the test captain so that he could also groom another youngster under his leadership, but the plan was not successful as KL Rahul’s form plummeted and he didn’t become a consistent member of the team. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out because of an injury, and Rishabh Pant met with a fatal car accident.

India is still looking for the next captain after Rohit, and now they have made Rahane the vice captain again for the two-match test series against the West Indies, but Gavaskar was not impressed by this move, as he thinks that this was a missed opportunity by the BCCI to groom a youngster for the future. Recently, in an interview, he said, “There is nothing wrong with making Rahane the vice captain, but the opportunity to groom a young player is missed. At Least tell a young player that we are looking at you as the future captain so that he starts thinking as a future leader

When Gavaskar was asked who should be the next Indian Captain after Rohit, he shortlisted three unusual names and said, “First is Shubman Gill, and the other is Akshar Patel, because Akshar gets better in every match, so giving him the responsibility of vice captain will make him think. If there are others, then someone like Ishan Kishan can also lead the team once he cements his position in the team.
