The best goalkeeper in the world has just missed out on the Champions League title 3 times in his career with two one being in 2015 against Barcelona and another against Real Madrid earlier this year.
The 39-year-old Italian man has won 10 Serie A titles, 3 Coppa Italias and the World Cup in 2006 alongside 173 caps for Italy, recently he revealed in an interview that unless the Turin side lifts the Champions League trophy at the end of the 2017/18 season he’ll be putting an end his remarkable career.
Speaking at the Fifa’s The Best Awards, where he was awarded the best goalkeeper of the year said
“There’s no margin because I’m quite convinced of the choices I’ve made.
“This is my last season and I’m pretty sure of the choices I make. One or two more years wouldn’t add or take away from what I’ve already achieved.
“The only way would be to win the Champions League.
“At that point, to try to win the Club World Cup, maybe Szczesny could play one game and me another.
“But I think with a goalkeeper like him behind it is normal that next year I’ll stand aside.”
We’ll have more to this story as it’ll continue to develop. Gianluigi Buffon’s retirement announcement is a big blow to football fans all over the world as Andre Pirlo has also announced that he’ll be retiring after Francesco Totti’s back in May. Three great Italian nationals that the world has seen are leaving the game, indeed sad times for football fans.
