Gianluigi Donnarumma

As he left Molineux on Saturday to catch the squad bus, the Italian goalkeeper was repeatedly insulted, prompting him to confront the person hurling the abuse.

After Italy’s Nations League match against England at Molineux on Saturday, an AC Milan supporter attacked and ridiculed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper was abused by a supporter many times as he exited the stadium after the scoreless draw. As he made his way to the squad bus, Donnarumma turned around to gesture at the man and walked toward him. He was part of a group of fans who were begging for player autographs.

The remarks had been disregarded at first, but Donnarumma became obviously agitated as they continued, leading in a brief confrontation that led the fan to quit. A member of the Italian national team staff hugged the goalkeeper after the event, who dismissed the entire situation as “nonsense.”

Last summer, the shot-stopper terminated his lengthy affiliation with Milan after he was unable to reach an agreement on a new deal with the Rossoneri and left the club to join Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

Donnarumma was a national hero a year ago when he saved two penalties in the Euro 2020 final against England to give the Azzurri the trophy, but there has been no reconciliation with big parts of Milan supporters.

The Milanese giants’ ultras unveiled two distinct banners directed at the goalie following Euro 2020, with the phrase “Be cautious, we don’t forget traitors.”

On one banner, it said: “We don’t forget traitors, so be careful when you return to Milan,” one said, while the other said, “Donnarumma, you ungrateful bast…” You’re worse than Leonardo when it comes to suckiness.” The second banner was a nod to then-sporting director Leonardo, who had previously worked with the Rossoneri as a player, manager, and sporting director before joining Inter.

Donnarumma made his first-team debut at the age of 16 and quickly established himself as the club’s regular goalkeeper, appearing in 251 games. The banners were unfurled little over a week after Gianluigi’s elder brother Antonio left the club after four years to join Serie C side Padova.

During his first season with Les Parisiens, Donnarumma only made 17 appearances in Ligue 1, accounting for less than half of the league’s games. Although the club’s established goalkeeper Keylor Navas was picked in five of the club’s eight Champions League fixtures the Italian was mostly a domestic understudy for the club’s permanent goalkeeper.
