What did Giorgio Chiellini say?

The Italian player has confirmed he will retire from international football following the summer final against Argentina at Wembley Stadium. Chiellini, the steelworking member of the Azzurri who propelled them to Euro 2020 glory last summer, will leave the squad after their clash with La Albiceleste in north London. The Italy captain had hoped to bolster European success with a kick to glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but Italy’s failure in qualifying means Giorgio has now bowed out with a final match at the stadium, where he led them to their final ski jump.

Speaking on duty for Juve following the club’s 2-1 victory over Sassuolo in Serie A on Monday, the player confirmed he hopes to be available to play in London – and that if so, he intends it to be his swanson. Giorgio Chiellini said that if he is fine, he will play and say goodbye to the national team at Wembley, where he reached the peak of his career. According to Chiellini, it would be great to say goodbye to the Azzurri jersey with a celebratory match, like with Argentina. It will be the last time for the team.

International achievements of Giorgio Chiellini

For the first time in 2004, as a 20-year-old during his spell with Fiorentina, Giorgio Chiellini was already a bronze medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics when, after Italy’s triumph at the 2006 World Cup, he forced himself to compete on a regular basis. In a nearly two-decade career, the Italian has become the fourth-highest player in the country’s history, with 116 games to his name, more than a frequent club and country partner of Bonucci’s.

Giorgio subsequently became one of the captains of the Azzurri in 2012, and was a member of the side that lost the Euro 2012 Final to Spain. Failure to depart for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia hung during his tenure, but a breakneck run to last summer’s Euro 2020 success ensured his reputation in national football history will forever be fondly remembered, even with a second consecutive slip in ahead of Qatar 2022.
