Cricket“Give them complete rest”- Gavaskar about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

After the WTC, India’s next stop is the West Indies, where they have to play two test matches, three ODIs, and five T20s. The team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the WTC final, where Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav were the notable players who didn’t perform well, and following this, both have been ruled out of the two-match test series against the West Indies. While Mohammad Shami is given rest. However, India’s legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, wasn’t happy with the Selection committee’s decisions. He stated that the West Indies tour was a great opportunity for the selectors to watch young cricketers and give breaks to senior cricketers as the next WTC cycle will be starting soon.

It was a great opportunity for Youngsters- Gavaskar

In an interview, he said, “It was a great opportunity to try and watch  the next line of cricketers because before the WTC cycle began, if there was any tour when they could do some experimentation, it was the West Indies. Gavasakar did not mention any cricketers names, but it was clear that he was talking about skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have been constantly playing cricket since the home series against Australia. They both will be important factors for the team in the ODI World Cup too, which is going to be held in India this year.

He further said that the WTC is gone and we missed the chance to win, but the next big thing is the ICC World Cup. I would prefer that big players be given complete rest from Test Cricket. I would have wanted them to just focus on White-ball cricket because they have been playing cricket continuously since October–November, and apart from injury breaks, they haven’t had any long breaks. It is certain who will play in the World Cup.

India will travel West Indies very early

Team India plans to travel to the West Indies more than a week before the first Test day as they will play a warm match there, but Gavaskar feels that this doesn’t make any sense because it will reduce the break time for senior players who have to play in the ODI World Cup later this year. They should be given a proper break so that their comeback is completely fresh for the white-ball format. The West Indies tour isn’t going to tell anything new about veteran players whether they’ll be there for the next two years for the WTC final, so a great opportunity is missed.
