Ilkay Gundogan remains a hero in Manchester City and says he would be happy to enter the goal or play left or right back if Pep Guardiola needed a positional shift to help the collective cause.

More advanced role

Germany’s international midfielder has cast a more advanced role for the Blues this season, with the shackles shaken by a player who has often filled a deep barbell. Fertile swooped down on the 30-year-old, but he claims he is just doing his job and will have no complaints about filling any position on the field if the manager sees a benefit to doing so.

Ilkay is ready to extend contract with Man.City

When asked if he could handle a striker in the City system, which often favors a false nine, Gundogan said: “If I have to, I’m ready. “It doesn’t matter where my manager wants me to play. If I have to go in goal or play left or right back, I will try to do my best, try to see what is required, what the manager expects of me, and try to do as much as possible”.

As Ederson continued to provide a solid last line of defense for City, Gundogan was freed to focus on issues in the final third of the field. He enthusiastically participates in what has become his most productive campaign in terms of the end product. Gundogan found the target 14 times in all competitions, while putting in two more assists.

There is no chance that Gundogan will be asked to fill in between the sticks anytime soon, and Zack Steffen will act as Ederson’s understudy, but rest and rotation will be crucial from this stage. That’s because City remains on the hunt for four pieces of silverware this season, with the Guardiola’s chasing a historic quad that could deliver the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League to Etihad Stadium.
