Darwin Nunez will make the switch to the PL side early next season, but his line play could be a problem, Guti claims.

What did Guti say?

The Reds’ £85m signing of the Uruguayan footballer has been described by the Spanish player as a clean striker, but Guti has singled out one issue he could have trouble with. Darwin Nunez is set for a summer transfer to PL after they fought off competition from other European sides to work out a deal. Darwin Nunez rose to prominence at Benfica, but the player enjoyed an impressive season at Spanish Almería while Guti was in charge.

The Real Madrid legend says the Uruguayan player has developed a lot since they worked together but considers his line play to be one of his biggest weaknesses. Guti said on air that Darwin Nunez was a child when he had him; Nunez has certainly matured over the years.

According to Guti, Darwin is a clean hitter; The Uruguayan is very good in the box. Nunez is very fast, very powerful and he’s good in front of the net. It’s still hard for him to make a connection when he’s not in the box, but Guti thinks the Uruguayan player has a great future.

At the time, Guti was surprised that no Spanish club, after a good season in Almería, looked at him and he left for Benfica. The former Madrid midfielder says he thinks the Portuguese league is good for Darwin Nunez to have made the jump to gain a bit more experience and sign for Liverpool.

Activities of Darwin Nunez in Benfica

After one season at Almería in which Darwin Nunez scored 16 goals in 32 matches, he made the move to Benfica in September 2020. His time in Portugal became one of the most sought-after talents in Europe. The Uruguayan was hardly prolific in his first year in the Primeira Liga as he finished the 2020-21 campaign with 13 goals from 43 matches in all competitions.

However, the striker was a revelation of the last term. Nunez finished the season with an incredible 26 goals from 28 matches in the Portuguese top flight, scoring six more in 10 Champions League games. In all competitions, Darwin finished with 34 goals from 41 matches.
