Liverpool hero John Arne Riise has called on Liverpool to beat Manchester City to acquire Erling Haaland’s signature – or risk their rivals becoming “unbeatable”.

Already, Haaland is regarded as one of the best players in the world at the age of 21 thanks to his prolific strike rate for Borussia Dortmund.

The striker has averaged over a goal per game since joining the Bundesliga club in January 2020 and has 11 goals and four assists in eight appearances this season.

Dortmund managed to keep hold of Haaland this summer thanks to their lofty £150million asking price, but he appears almost certain to move next year.

This is because the Norwegian is believed to have a release clause which will come into force allowing him to depart for a fee in the region of £64million to £85million.

Reportedly, Liverpool and City are among the six clubs Haaland would consider joining. In other words, either of the two Premier League title contenders have a realistic chance of signing him if they meet his release clause.

In this regard, Riise is desperate for his “unbelievable” compatriot to move to Anfield and claims he would seamlessly adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“Obviously I would love to have him at Liverpool, because he’s an unbelievable player”. Riise said.

“He’s in great form, and I think he would suit Klopp’s style of football. I also think he would love Liverpool as a club.”

If there is one thing City’s star-studded squad is lacking, it is a proven goal scorer at centre-forward after missing out on Harry Kane this summer.

Riise has no doubt Haaland could fill the No.9 void in Pep Guardiola’s side to devastating effect and warned other Premier League sides City would be invincible with him leading the line.

“Whoever gets Haaland, whether it’s next season or whatever, is going to be an unbelievably strong team for many years to come.”

“I don’t know if Liverpool have the chance to sign him, but if they do then please do, because that would be unbelievable for the club – or for any club that signs him!”
