Australian international seamer Nathan Ellis kept his pulse well in the last over. That left Lancashire at 151-8 – and the Hampshire Hawks winners became the Vitality Blast 2022 wickets by just one run.

Hawks captain James Vince said, “All the credit goes to Nathan for being so calm there at the end.”

“He has played for Australia a few times and I am sure he will play more matches. It was wonderful for him to be so restrained and then brave enough to deliver the slow ball for that last ball.

Vince said, “I am very proud of the players who have been a part of all three Hampshire T20 victories.

He showed a lot of awareness in the final. Lancashire started their innings well but we have shown in the last few seasons that we are never out of the game, be it red ball or white ball.

‘We’ve won a few games now defending low scores and when you do that the confidence grows and grows.

‘The players have done really well, it’s all great what I’m saying, but they have to go out there and put them out there and they did it brilliantly.’

Hampshire Hawks finished as T20 winners after losing their opening four South group games. From the bottom position, they qualified for the last eight in fourth place, winning nine of their next 10 appearances.

That sensational run was extended to 11 in 12 with Final Day victories over Somerset – their first in the semi-final at Edgbaston – and Lancashire.

Lancashire captain Dane Vilas said, “Of course it is very disappointing to lose, but it has been a great campaign for us and I am proud of the people. It was tough to take but that is the nature of Twenty20. You are never really in control in this format.

‘We knew we had to bat well and hopefully there will be some luck and unfortunately we came up short.’
