Haaland’s release clause is just rumours, Watzke says
The 2022 summer transfer window is set to have two main storylines, with a pair of superstar strikers available for Europe’s top clubs. Kylian Mbappe has already made it clear his intentions are to leave Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, with Real Madrid his desired destination. At the same time, the other hotshot set for a move away from his current club is Borussia Dortmund star, Erling Haaland. Haaland reportedly has a 75 million euro release clause in his contract that becomes active when the summer window opens in June. Still, club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has moved to deny these rumours at a club shareholders meeting. “Everything published around this clause is a rumour that does not correspond to reality,” he said. However, he cast some doubt on the specifics of the Norwegian’s contract. “I cannot confirm if there is a release clause as such,” he added.

While the lack of a 75 million euro clause may deter some of those interested in the 21-year-old, further rumours are suggesting that there is a verbal agreement between Haaland and Borussia Dortmund that would see any reasonable offer accepted. Haaland burst onto the European scene for RB Salzburg in the Champions League as he fired in 28 goals in 22 games for the Austrian club, including a goal at Anfield and five hat-tricks in domestic matches. Borussia Dortmund swooped to purchase forward’s rights for 20m in January of 2020, and he has gone on to score 71 goals in 70 games for the Black and Yellow.
He recently went through an injury layoff which saw him miss crucial World Cup qualifiers for Norway, ultimately seeing his country miss out on qualification. But, when he returned to action for Borussia Dortmund, he scored just seven minutes after coming off the bench in a 3-1 win against Wolfsburg.
