Flick and Neuer are happy to welcome Sane to Bayern

Hansi Flick and Manuel Neuer were satisfied to welcome Leroy Sane to Bayern Munich on Friday but rapidly changed their attention to the DFB-Pokal final. Bayern confirmed the long-awaited arrival of Sane from Manchester City under a five-year agreement. With a fee reportedly up to €60 million (£55 million/$67 million). But the Bundesliga champions have minor time to think about their successful pursuit of the winger when they are preparing to take on Leverkusen Bayer in Berlin on Saturday in the second leg of their treble bid. Flick said of his new signing: “We are happy, but not the time to talk about it”. Captain Neuer was a little friendlier when asked about his team-mate Sane, but his main focus was on raising another title.

The 10-match winning streak

“I hope Leroy can win the DFB-Pokal with Bayern in the later,” Neuer said. “We Bayern players are delighted that Sane will be with us next season”. Flick hopes that Niklas Sule will return, and his defense entrusted to restrain Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz, another Germany international associated with Bayern. Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz says his side cannot rely solely on the 21-year-old Havertz. “He is important, but he cannot win the game alone,” said Bosz. “I don’t imagine the game has anything to do with his future”. Hansi agreed individual quality alone will not decide the day, adding: “Both teams have outstanding players, but you cannot be successful alone. We should not think about who the main player is.”

Since returning to action after the enforced break caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Bayern have been in terrible shape. Playing in empty venues was not a problem for the Flick’s team. As they enjoyed the 10-game winning race, which includes a 4-2 victory over their Saturday rivals. FCB are defending champions, having enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the 2018/19 show. Robert Lewandowski won the man of the match after offsetting on both sides of a Kingsley Coman strikee. Bayern meanwhile have not won the cup since 1993, when they defeated Hertha BSK Amateure. It is the only time they have won the DFB-Pokal.
