2022 World Cup

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar kicks off on November 21 – less than six months away.

You probably know that the specific dates of the tournament will greatly affect the calendars of the championships and European competitions. Now it became clear exactly how the team schedule will look like.

The top leagues are getting tighter

  • The Premier League starts 6-7 August and plays until 12-13 November. After that, the players go to Qatar, and the championship resumes on December 26 – yes, immediately Boxing day. The season ends at the very end of May.

There is a high probability of overlapping matches and the closing of the transfer window on August 31 – September 1.

  • La Liga starts on 12 August and also stops on 12-13 November. Spanish football will return on December 29, ending only on June 4.
  • Ligue 1 has a combo of Spain and England: starts 6-7 August, plays until 12-13 November, returns on 28 December and stops only by 4 June.
  • Serie A starts on 13-14 August, with a break from 13 November to early January. The season will also end on June 4th.
  • While the other top leagues have 20 clubs, the Bundesliga has 18 – making the aftermath of Qatar a little easier to bear. The scheme is as follows: August 5 – November 13 – January 20 and the final in May. Germany will give the players a rest after the World Cup.

Group games in European competitions – almost every week

  • Big Euro season kicks off on 10 August with Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt playing the UEFA Super Cup in Helsinki.
  • At this time, qualification for the Champions League will be in full swing: it will start on June 21st and will last right up to August 24th. The qualifying stage of the Europa League is scheduled for August 4 and will end on August 25 along with the Conference League. Selection in the LC begins on July 7th.
  • Two weeks after qualifying, the group stage begins. This is where the tightness of the schedule becomes maximum: 6 games in the group stage will take place in less than two months.
  • The last game day of the group stage is scheduled for November 2nd. LE and LC – a day later.
  • The playoffs will not be affected by World Cup 22, but the finals had to be moved: the EL will play on 31 May, the LC is currently scheduled for 7 June, and the Champions League will close the season three days later on 10 June.

What are the players and coaches saying?

The schedule is simply incredible: a member of European competitions will play every four days. It is clear that the players are not at all enthusiastic about the upcoming mega-test. Many do not yet destroy the busy schedule, but are surprised that their vacation before the most difficult season is shortened by the League of Nations in early June.

Thibault Courtois was one of the first to publicly speak out: “Next year we are waiting for the World Cup in November, and then we will continue to play for clubs until June. There will be injuries. Nobody cares about the players. Four more Nations League games will be added in June, followed by a two-week vacation. But this is not enough for the players to be able to perform at the highest level for 12 months.”
