The pitch of the first Test between Pakistan and Australia in Rawalpindi was heavily criticised. The pitch was very flat and the match ended in a monotonous draw.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has now given its decision regarding this pitch and has given it a demerit point. ICC has described the pitch as worse than average.

The ICC has stated in its release that match referee Ranjan Madugalle has described the Rawalpindi pitch as below average and has given one demerit point to the ground.

Madugalle said, “The pitch did not have a great deal of pace and bounce in it for the seamers nor assisted the spinners as the match progressed. “In my view, this does not represent an even contest between bat and ball. Therefore, in keeping with the ICC guidelines I rate this pitch as below average.”

The ICC provides ratings for the performance of the pitch and outfield of every international match. In January 2018, the ICC made some updates to its pitch and outfield monitoring procedure.

The match referee marks the pitch, classifying it as: Very Good, Good, Average, Below Average, Poor, Unfit. According to the board, “The rating is given to the host nation as a guide for further preparation. If the pitch or outfield is not up to the prescribed standard, then the home board gets an opportunity to make its stand for it. Poor or unfit and rated pitches are considered contrary to the standard.”

Earlier, Steve Smith described the pitch as “dead”. Also, Ramiz Raja said, “not a good advertisement for Test cricket”. According to the ICC, the pitch on which there is no equal opportunity for the batsmen and bowlers is termed as bad.

According to ICC standards, “If the pitch is giving too much support to the batsmen and bowlers of both the teams fail to get wickets, or if the pitch gives too much support to the bowlers that it becomes extremely difficult to bat, then the pitch may be regarded unfit.”

Pakistan Cricket Board has accepted the ICC’s decision and further stated, “The PCB remains confident and optimistic that we will not only see good contests in the Karachi and Lahore Tests but in all future domestic international matches as well.”
