Casillas: “Football is my world”

Iker Casillas is not sure if he will relish a career in coaching, but pointed out that if it ever does, his style will be similar to those of Zinedine Zidane, Vicente del Bosque or Carlo Ancelotti. More than 12 months after his heart attack, Casillas emphasized that he was healthy and had received the green light from doctors to lead an everyday life. “Fortunately, more than a year and a half have passed since the heart attack, and the cardiologist gave me permission to lead a normal life,” Casillas told reporters. “Football is my world. I’ve seen different positions where I could be, and we’ll see what I do. If I were a coach, I think I would be more like Zidane, Del Bosque or Ancelotti, although my character on the field was a little different.”

Iker wants to help Spain and young people

When asked to reveal his goalkeeper idol, Casillas pointed to former Real Sociedad striker Luis Arconada. He also ranked three Spanish club goalkeepers among the best in the world. “I think Marc-André ter Stegen and Jan Oblak were very important to their clubs and Thibaut Courtois was the goalkeeper we were expecting at Real Madrid,” added Casillas. “I would put all three above rest and I have more memories of Luis Arconada. He was a fantastic goalkeeper, and I was lucky to meet him. Also Andoni Zubizarreta and Santiago Canizares, but for me, the Arconada is the most mythical”. Despite the announcement in February that he would run for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), four months later, Casillas backtracked and left the race open for Luis Rubiales.

“My idea was for the Spanish Football Federation and LaLiga to go hand in hand, to look at each other for the benefit of football and players,” Casillas said. “I won’t rule it out to run for the presidency in the long term. I had passed all the levels of the national team since when I was young, but I would like to help my country, especially the youth.”
