Casillas and Xavi’s curious friendship

Iker Casillas and Xavi Hernandez have always shared a funny relationship. They served as captains of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively for some period, while they also spent such a good time with the Spain national team. In the fourth chapter of ‘Hanging Up The Wings’, a documentary series about Casillas that is being broadcast on Movistar . The couple recalled the aftermath of Iker’s heart attack in May 2019. “I heard the news and saw that Iker was active on social media,” Xavi recalled. “I sent him a message asking ‘Iker, please tell me you’re okay’ and I was reassured when he answered me, as always. He said ‘it was like this’ and sent me a skull emoji.”

During the fourth episode, Casillas also touched on the Los Galacticos era at Real Madrid, with Ronaldo Nazario, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and David Beckham for the same team. “It was a different world: Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo… 40 photographers behind Beckham every time he went out,” added Casillas. During the 2003/04 campaign, Real Madrid struggled a nightmare end to their season in LaLiga, losing the Copa del Rey final with Real Zaragoza. “We won for nine months, and everything went brilliantly, of course. But losing the Cup final against Zaragoza hurt us,” Casillas continued. “It was a recession that came out of nowhere. That was the period between the third week of March and mid-May.”

“It wasn’t just a matter of grande names. We had to be a squad, and we didn’t have that. Three years without winning nor testing for anything while Barcelona took off and won two consecutive league titles and the Champions League in 2006.”
