England legend, Steven Gerrard can only think of what could have been in his time as an England player if there was a manager like Jurgen Klopp in charge.

Steven Gerrard was part of an England team that deemed the “golden generation” or English football. The line up included Beckham, Lampard, Terry, Scholes, Rooney and the list of stars goes on.

Unfortunately, the group spectacularly failed to reach the dizzying heights of expectations placed upon them.

The Liverpool legend played under the likes of Sven Goran Eriksson, Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello for the Three Lions. Gerrard insists they needed to be bigger.

Speaking to BBC, the Glasgow Rangers manager admits the team was packed with big-name players, but they needed a manager that was bigger than them to lead.

He said, “I look back on England with a lot of regrets. I see the picture of that tram and we had some fantastic groups of players over the years. We came close at times but there’s no getting away from it, we underperformed”.

“Looking back, we needed a manager who was bigger than all of those individual players”.

“There were managers available at the time, for example, Rafa Benitez, but he might not have wanted to have been an international manager at that time”.

“I look at managers now that are bigger than the team; Klopp, Mourinho and Guardiola. I think someone like that who was above the golden generation who was prepared to make the tough decisions would have got more out of that group of players. In my opinion”.

What’s your thought, could any of these managerial greats take England to glory?
