IND vs SL 1st Test: Ravi Ashwin breaks Kapil Dev’s Record in Test matches, now have 435 wickets in Test

Team India has reached a strong position in the first Test between India and Sri Lanka (India Vs Sri Lanka Mohali Test Cricket Match) being played in Mohali. India has given follow-on to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka was all out for 174 in the first innings.

India’s top off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin broke Kapil Dev’s record of 434 Test wickets. Whereas on the third day of the first cricket test, Sri Lanka seems to be on the verge of defeat after losing 7 wickets for 131 runs after tea by an innings margin.

Ashwin touched this figure in the 85th Test, while Kapil took so many wickets in 131 Tests. Looking at Kapil and Ashwin’s rounds, conditions and opposing teams, comparisons cannot be made and the bowling of both is also different. Talking about statistics only, this is a big achievement of Tamil Nadu spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Sri Lanka 400 runs behind in first innings

Earlier, with the help of five wickets from Ravindra Jadeja, India took a 400-run lead in the first innings by dismissing Sri Lanka for 174 runs in the first innings. The Sri Lankan team was again in trouble while playing the follow-on. Ashwin made Lahiru Thirimanne his 433rd victim in the first session.

While handling the new ball, Ashwin got Thirimanne caught by Rohit at the second slip. After lunch, Ashwin completed 434 wickets by catching Pathum Nisanka behind the wicket by Rishabh Pant.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami got Dimuth Karunaratne (27) caught by Pant while Ravindra Jadeja made Dhananjay de Silva (30) his sixth victim in the match. Angelo Mathews 27 and Charit Asalanka were playing 20 runs at tea time.

This is Virat Kohli’s hundredth Test and Rohit Sharma’s first Test as captain. But Jadeja proved to be the hero in this, who took five wickets for 41 runs in 13 overs. The Sri Lankan team got out in 45 overs.

Lost the last six wickets within 13 runs

Sri Lanka lost the last six wickets within 13 runs. After the score of 161 for four wickets in the first hour, the entire team returned to the pavilion for 174 runs. Pathum Nisanka scored an unbeaten 61 off 133 balls while Charit Asalanka added 58 runs. Bumrah started the collapse of the Sri Lankan innings by dismissing Asalanka.

The rest of the batsmen lost their wickets by playing bad shots. Niroshan Dickwella (two) in an attempt to play a slog sweep to Jadeja, caught Shreyas Iyer at square leg. Suranga Lakmal survived the DRS appeal but lost his wicket early on by Ashwin.

Ashwin took two for 49 and Mohammed Shami took one wicket for 27 runs. Jadeja has achieved the feat of taking five wickets in an innings for the 20th time in Test cricket.

Jadeja becomes part of a special club

Ravindra Jadeja has made a record in the Mohali Test match. He has become the fourth player from India to take 5 wickets in an innings apart from a century in a Test match. R Ashwin has done this feat thrice. Ashwin made this record in 2011 and 2016 against West Indies and in 2021 against England.

Vinoo Mankad did this feat for the first time against England in 1952. At the same time, Polly Umrigar took 5 wickets apart from scoring a century in a Test against West Indies in 1962.

With this, Jadeja has become the third Indian player to score 150 runs in a Test and take 5 wickets in an innings. The names Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar come before him.
