Ireland Team for India Series: Cricket Ireland on Wednesday announced its team for the two-match T20 series against India. In this team, top-order batsman Stephen Doheny and fast bowler Conor Olfert have been given a chance for the first time.
Both the players were recently given retainer contracts by Cricket Ireland and are now included in the 14-man squad to face India in Malahide on 26 and 28 June.
These players got the place
Indian-origin off-spin all-rounder Simi Singh was not given a place in the team, left-handed batsman Andrew McBrine as off spin and Gareth Delany as leg spin all-rounder have been included in the team.
The 23-year-old plays club cricket with Doheny Merion and is the current leading run-scorer in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy competition, scoring 158 runs at an average of 52.67, with an unbeaten 74. He has scored valuable runs at the top of the order in the 50-over inter-provincial competition, scoring 146 runs at 36.50 with the highest score of 97.
Team India will face
The 25-year-old Olfert plays for Brady at club level and when he made his List A debut in 2020, the current season has been one of his most watched. Known for his speed and bounce, the fast bowler was picked up as a net bowler on the UAE tour in early 2021.
He has so far taken 6 wickets at 19.17 in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy. National Men’s President Andrew White said, “Olfert has bowled well, especially on good wickets in Comber last month, and his selection gives him an opportunity to look at him as a tactical option.”
This will be Ireland’s first T20I series under the coaching of Henrik Malan, who has enjoyed success as a coach in New Zealand’s domestic circuit for more than 11 years.
White said, ‘Tickets for the first match have been sold, while a limited number of tickets are available for the second match. The selectors believe that we have picked teams that consistently form and perform on the field and are rewarded.
