Pakistan had pushed India to fourth place after beating West Indies 3-0 at home last month. However, his stay at No 3 was short-lived after India beat England for 110 in the first ODI, after which Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan sealed the win with their fourth century partnership in six ODIs at the Oval.
With two ODIs left in the series, and three more in the West Indies later this month, the Indian ODI team has an opportunity to extend their lead over Pakistan in the rankings and move closer to England. However, if India loses the last two matches of the series against England, India could fall below Pakistan and in fourth place.
Virat Kohli’s fitness is being questioned as India go on to claim the series at Lord’s on Thursday. He was rested to Virat Kohli due to a groin strain during the third T20I in Nottingham last Sunday.
Jasprit Bumrah said after the first ODI, “I don’t know his injury status because I didn’t play the last match [Third T20I]. Hopefully he will recover, but I don’t really know his injury status.”
A groin strain is the latest setback for Kohli on a tough tour of England. He scored 11 and 20 in the Edgbaston Test which India lost to a 2–2 draw of the series, and was then dismissed at 1 and 11 in the second and third T20 Internationals.
Kohli has already been rested from the ODI series in the Caribbean from July 22 along with four other senior players including Rohit, Rishabh Pant, Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. It remains to be seen whether Kohli will play the five-match T20I series in the West Indies starting July 29. The team for that series is to be selected in the coming days.
