Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara scored his 5th century for Sussex on Tuesday on the first day of the County Championship Division Two game against Middlesex at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. Interestingly, Pujara was made the captain of Sussex before the match, and he scored 115* off 182 balls on Tuesday. Pujara’s innings was the second highest score for Sussex on the opening day as Tom Alsop returned to the pavilion on an individual score of 135 off 277 balls.

The 34-year-old took 144 balls to reach his century and ended the day on an unbeaten individual score of 115 runs. He hit 10 fours and a six during his innings at a strike rate of 63.18.

It was his fifth century for Sussex, starting with his double century against Derbyshire. Pujara scored his second century against Worcestershire, before scoring another double century against Durham. The international Test legend scored 170* while playing against Middlesex in May, which helped him earn a Team India call-up.

After being excluded from the for the home series against Sri Lanka in March, Pujara picked some fine form in County Championship. In the 5th Test against England that began on 1 July, Pujara contributed with a crucial 66 in the second innings. However, India lost the match by seven wickets.

Since joining Sussex Pujara has been in excellent form for the team. He was selected as the captain of Sussex for the ongoing match after regular captain Tom Haines was ruled out for six weeks with a broken bone in his hand. Haines suffered an injury while batting against Leicestershire earlier this month.

Indian bowler Umesh Yadav is also playing in the same match but as a middlesex player. He was announced by the team in place of Pakistan bowler Shaheen Afridi earlier this month. He bowled a total of 18 overs on the first day and conceded 42 without any dismissals as the Sussex ended the day on 328/4.

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar was included by Lancashire County for the remainder of the County Championship Division One of this season. He instantly made an impact during his debut on Tuesday. Playing his first match against Northamptonshire, Sundar returned with best figures of 4/69 for Lancashire in 20 overs. The 22-year-old’s clinical bowling effort helped the team restrict Northamptonshire to 218/7 on the first day of the match.
