IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians Team Analysis
Mumbai Indians (MI), the most successful franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL), will start its 2022 season with a match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on March 27.
Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, MI could not make it to the play-offs last season and finished fifth in the points table. In such a situation, this time the team would like to perform better with a new combination.
Before the auction, MI had retained Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. At the same time, there has been an attempt to stabilise the batting order by including Ishan Kishan again in the auction.
MI has also bought Devald Brevis, who rocked the Under-19 World Cup. There has been no major change in MI’s batting order, which seems to be balanced with young and experienced players.
MI had released Trent Boult, who was the wicket-taker and proved fatal along with Jasprit Bumrah. MI has bet on foreign fast bowlers Jofra Archer, Riley Meredith and Tymal Mills. However, Archer is not available for this season.
In such a situation, Boult’s strong option is not seen in MI’s team. Apart from this, MI does not have any big name in the spin department.
MI had released Hardik and Krunal Pandya. Both these players have made significant contributions to the MI team throughout the last 5-6 IPL seasons. There is no big Indian all-rounder in their place now.
MI’s squad this season includes foreign all-rounders – Kieron Pollard, Daniel Sams, Fabian Allen and Tim David. Except Pollard, all three don’t have any specific experience playing in the IPL.
In such a situation, the team will once again rely on the experienced Pollard on the ground but unlikely he will fire in every match.
Ishaan and Rohit can open the innings. On the other hand, experienced Suryakumar and young Dewald Brevis could be useful for No. 3 and 4.
All-rounders like Tim David and Pollard can play their role in the middle order. Daniel Sams/Tymal Mills could be the fourth foreigner in the playing XI to take charge of the bowling along with Jasprit Bumrah.
Apart from these, Indian options like Mayank Markande, Murugan Ashwin and Jaydev Unadkat will be present with the team.
