IPL Auction 2022

Around 590 players will go under the hammer in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction slated to be held on February 12 & 13 in Bangalore. The IPL Governing Council has decided that only 161 players out of 590 will be auctioned on Day 1 & the rest of the players will be auctioned on the second day.

The sequence of Auction Process

The IPL Auction 2022 will begin with a set of 10 marquee players including R Ashwin, Trent Boult, Pat Cummins, Quinton De Kock, Shikhar Dhawan, Faf DuPlessis, Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada,  Mohammad Shami, David Warner going under the hammer. These are the most wanted players who will be auctioned at the beginning of the process.

Other than these players the others have been divided into different sets based on their speciality so far. There are 62 sets of players along with the marquee set. After the auction of the marquee set, a full round of capped players will go under the gavel based on the specialization- batters, all-rounders, wicketkeeper-batters, fast bowlers, and spin bowlers.

After capped players, uncapped players will be the last set of players in the auction sequence. Unlike the last mega auction in 2018, the IPL GC has decided not to have a Right to Match option this time. Only 161 players will be up for bidding on Saturday while the second day of the IPL 2022 Auction will start with an accelerated bidding process.

Accelerated Process of IPL 2022 Auction

The accelerated process will begin on day 2 of the auction. At the end of the first day of the IPL 2022 Auction, the franchisees will be asked to nominate from the remaining pool of the players they would be interested to bid in. The players named by the franchisees will then go under the hammer on Sunday. This process will be repeated again if any franchise wants to bid for the unsold players.

Date, Time & Venue of the Auction

Contrary to various reports doing rounds, IPL 2022 Auction will take place at 12 pm. The IPL franchises will assemble in the auction hall by 11 pm. This is the 5th mega IPL auction in 15 years. The auction will take place in the Hotel ITC Gardenia in Bangalore.
