Broad went on to bowl the short ball and Jasprit Bumrah went on to score runs like de Villiers. It ended what seemed like after an age, with a record 35 runs out of it – including a no-ball and a wide – for a new record in Test cricket. This was not the first time that an Indian player had smashed Broad for breaking the record for most runs in an over; Yuvraj Singh hit six consecutive sixes against Broad in the 2007 T20 World Cup, which is a record.
When Broad started the 84th over of the innings, India were at 377-9, with Jasprit Bumrah joining No.11 Mohammad Siraj after Ravindra Jadeja’s departure. In the next six balls (and two extra balls), India scored 35 runs, sending Broad to the top of the list of most expensive overs in Test cricket. India’s stand-in captain Bumrah hit four fours and two sixes during the incredible attack, helped with five wides and a no-ball, which was on top for six behind the wicket.
With 35 overs, Broad put up a combined score of 28 runs in an over from Robin Peterson, James Anderson and Joe Root against West Indies’ Brian Lara (2003), Australia’s George Bailey (2013) and South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj. left back. Bumrah now leads the list of most runs in a Test over with 29 runs to his name.
A few overs ago, Broad took his 550th Test wicket. Now he is just 13 wickets behind Glenn McGrath. James Anderson also once took five wickets in an innings, his sixth against India and 32 five-wicket haul in Test career.
