“I told the Executive Committee that any reform made on this issue must include a cap on the income of unlimited amounts of money by shareholders, members or state clubs and that Spain and almost all the leagues agreed to that,” he claimed.

According to Javier Tebas, the clubs should have more decision-making power

Earlier this year, the news of 12 major clubs across Europe agreeing to join a new European Super League broke the internet. La Liga president Javier Tebas was amongst its most prominent critics. However, the proposed league still remains a hot topic today, with Tebas voicing his opinion in an interview. “I told the Executive Committee that any reform made on this issue must include a cap on the income of unlimited amounts of money by shareholders, members or state clubs and that Spain and almost all the leagues agreed to that,” he claimed. Going on to discuss the ruling of the European Super League, Tebas showed his support for the plans. “I agree with the Super League on some aspects like governance; I said that to Real Madrid and Barcelona,” he said.

‘The bigger we make La Liga, the stronger they will become’

“In short, I think the clubs should have more decision-making power. Here, for example, there is a television control body of six of us, and five are clubs. This has to improve because the clubs are the engine of football, but I criticise the big clubs for saying ‘I run the show and I give handouts to the rest of you’. UEFA has to take a step here, and I told Aleksander Ceferin that.” Tebas went on to talk about the possibility of Barcelona’s future as a Public Limited Company. “I haven’t offered that as a solution to the club; I haven’t spoken to them about anything,” he stated. “From what I know about the presidents of Barcelona Joan Laporta and Real Madrid Florentino Perez, it’s impossible for them to do that.

“And it is my duty that the composition of the two best clubs in the world remains as it is because that is what their social following wants. That’s why we have to fight with the state clubs for this. The bigger we make LaLiga, the stronger they will become.”
