Man United blocked Jesse Lingard’s attempts to leave Old Trafford on loan five hours before the transfer window closes despite Ralf Rangnick giving it his blessing.

United has been in talks with Newcastle over a deal until the end of the season, while West Ham were also bidding to take Lingard on loan again.

Newcastle made an offer of £3million up front with a further £4m if they avoid relegation. Newcastle’s attention returned to Lingard on Monday when a £33m deal for Reims striker Hugo Etitike collapsed with the 19-year-old unsure of making such a big move abroad at this stage of his career.

Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley and head coach Eddie Howe were pushing hard to bring in Lingard, who wanted to join the club. They were in talks last week but walked away when quoted a £2.5m loan fee plus a £12m survival bonus.

Sources say United were willing to lower the survival payment to £9m over the weekend but hopes of a deal were dashed just after 6pm on Monday.

But it’s understood that United chairman Joel Glazer pulled the plug on a deal with the Premier League strugglers and their Saudi owners.

United were also reluctant to allow Lingard to go back to West Ham, Tottenham and Leicester because they are seen as top-four rivals.

Additionally, Everton had expressed an interest. However, the side could not sign two players on loan from United if they take Donny van de Beek for the rest of the season.

Lingard is said to be hugely disappointed at the news, especially after Rangnick gave his departure the green light following talks at Carrington on Monday morning.

The 29-year-old was desperate to play football again and reclaim a place in the England squad ahead of the World Cup, having made just two starts for United this season.

Lingard must now see out the rest of his contract at Old Trafford before leaving as a free agent in the summer after 21 years’ service.

United sources insist that the decision to keep him is not connected to the possibility of Mason Greenwood being out of action for some time while he remains under investigation over allegations of rape and sexual assault.
