For the Blues, the 28-year-old Romelu Lukaku earned his first Premier League start in almost two months against Arsenal.

After earning his first Premier League start in almost two months, Lukaku was, however, scarcely apparent during the game, continuing his woes in what has been a disappointing comeback season at Stamford Bridge.

Hasselbaink was not satisfied with Chelsea’s overall performance, but he was particularly harsh on Lukaku.

‘Today was a truly awful performance for Chelsea,’ he said. Lukaku, (Malang) Sarr, and (Andreas) Christensen are among the players who are getting chances.’

‘Returning to Lukaku, he isn’t doing enough. You have to run around if you want to be a man. You should make an effort to show that you’re bothered. You must desire to suffer.’

‘He doesn’t run around, he doesn’t get into gaps, and he doesn’t ask his teammates for the ball.’

They face a hungry Arsenal side that has lost three games in a row and is looking to prove a point.

‘You need to go above and beyond and at the very least show some emotion.’ Lukaku lacked enthusiasm, and Sarr and Christensen are incapable of making such errors in these kinds of games.’

Later in the post-match report, he continued to criticize Lukaku, saying the Belgian striker, along with a number of other players, were not good enough.

‘If you look at the game, they were much below standard, but Lukaku, Christensen, Sarr, and Alonso were just not good enough for a Chelsea squad that should be competing for the Champions League or the Premier League,’ he said.

‘I understand you can’t be the best anymore, but you still play for dignity.’

‘Lukaku, you haven’t had the best games, but you’ve shown that you’re the guy and truly want it. I didn’t see your desire, so go ahead and show it to me. I didn’t see that desire.

When asked how he felt about Lukaku’s performance, he replied, ‘Very awful.’ I sincerely hope he succeeds. This team is in desperate need of a number nine.

‘Then you see (Kai) Havertz come in, he goes into spaces, he wants the ball, he runs all over the place, left, right, and center, not everything works out, but he tries.’

‘I’m not seeing Lukaku doing that.’ He’s leading the line; continue to lead the line. I wasn’t aware of it.’
