Laporta is promoting ESL with Florentino Perez
Barcelona president Joan Laporta remains firm on the idea of his club participating in a breakaway European Super League, despite the backlash it has faced on the continent. Laporta also discussed the major issues surrounding the club, from the possible arrival of Erling Haaland, the contract of Ousmane Dembele and the return of Leo Messi. “It’s moving forward,” Laporta said about the European Super League in an interview. “We are promoting the project together with Florentino Perez, with whom I speak often. It is a way to save European football. It is evident that we must fit it into the framework of European football without destroying the domestic leagues.”
“They are essential for us. We cannot allow European football to be in the hands of states that do not belong to the European Union. It is clear that Manchester City and PSG have a money-making machine, and we are fighting against that.”
Barca are not going to make signings that alter our salary policy
“Not only the three clubs that I am talking about, but others who are silent, but in the background, they give us their support.” Barcelona are in line to bolster their coffers with a deal with CVC and the naming rights of the Camp Nou from Spotify. Still, Laporta is wary about going overboard with signings, even for Erling Haaland or Leo Messi. “I am obviously in that I put the institution above the players, coaches, directors and executives,” he said. “We are not going to make signings that alter our salary policy. We want to improve the team over individuals. I will not give any names because it would raise their price, and it would do Barcelona a disservice. If Leo Messi wants to talk to me about returning to Barcelona, I would be delighted.”
Laporta remains optimistic about Barcelona’s chances of winning LaLiga. “I’m convinced we can win it. What’s more, we will win it!” he said. “To put it simply: in the last stretch of the season, we are solid, with the team working at full capacity, with a coach who has clear ideas and makes us play our genuine style of football. We have recovered our essence, and we have to go with optimism and will to go for LaLiga. It will not be easy, it’s clear that it is a massive challenge, but I believe it is feasible.”
