Lionel Messi generates more income than he makes
Barcelona’s presidential candidate Joan Laporta has stepped out and defended Lionel Messi after the contract he signed in 2017 came to light on Saturday night. The report showed that Messi could earn up to €555,237,619 over a four-season period, but, also reported that the Argentine is still owed €63.5 million of the season’s current salary. “It is bad news because it is disrespectful and because of the club’s mismanagement. It is easier for these things to happen,” the candidate said. “The club’s situation is not caused by Leo’s contract. He generates more income than he makes. We have done our research and he generates about a third of Barcelona’s total income”. Laporta pointed out how Messi helped Barcelona win on the field, making them more marketable.
“From 2004 to 2019, we have won 35 titles and Real Madrid 22, and this, in large part, is thanks to Lionel Messi,” Laporta explained. “Without him, we would not have won so much. There are nine athletes in the world who make more money about the club’s total income.” Messi accounts for a total of 8.2 per cent of the club’s expenditure. All the sponsors demand to have Leo. The potential Barcelona president wants Messi to stay. “I will do my best to keep him,” Laporta confirmed. “I have indications that he is fine at Barcelona; he wants to stay and needs to trust a sporting project.”
