Barcelona would cut wages from the players again

Joan Laporta’s Barcelona board don’t want to fall into the same serious errors as their predecessors, and they are obvious that the economic restrictions on the club will lead to players needing to agree to pay cuts. The players can either accept this, or the club’s doors will open for them to leave. The players already know this, and Laporta has told them clearly. The playing staff see the situation, from Ronald Araujo and Gavi through to Ousmane Dembele and Gerard Pique. The new signings (Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie, and others) are clear about Barcelona’s financial situation and what it requires of them. The players have been made aware of the position, so Laporta doesn’t understand specific complaints about comparisons between players who are just starting out at the highest level and those who are already established.

Laporta hopes the players will adapt

For example, Araujo doesn’t feel as though his salary matches his worth, taking into account the salary of signings such as Christensen, who will be paid six million euros a year. Laporta and his board want the players to feel loved and valued, but they also want to keep hold of only those who really want to be at the Camp Nou. The president made this clear to Dembele in the negotiations for his extension, which broke down due to a lack of a financial agreement. He has also clarified Gavi and Araujo in recent discussions between the club and the players’ agents. Laporta has also recently given interviews to several Catalan media outlets. “They will all be based on parameters that everyone understands,” Laporta explained. “I hope that they will adapt. It’s no problem if anybody doesn’t want to be here.”

Laporta believes that the squad have to look to their coach, Xavi Hernandez. He is one of the individuals at the club with the lowest pay, at around three million euros. In Qatar, he earned twice as much. He earns half the amount, for example, as the signings for next season. The president wants to build a competitive team. He intends to return to fighting for the Champions League and wants players who really want to play for Barcelona. He is very clear that no player is above the club and that he will not risk the club’s stability for a single professional. The signings understand of the situation, and Laporta hopes those already at the club are too.
